Philodendron erubescens Scarlet Princess
Where the Pink Princess produces bold hot pink sectors against deep green or near-black, the Scarlet Princess expresses its chimeric variegation in a warmer, redder palette — cream to mint-green variegated sectors overlaid on leaves that carry a rich red flushing and deep burgundy-green ground coloration characteristic of the Red Anderson mutation, giving the plant a distinctly different and warmer overall mood than PPP. New leaves emerge with the bronzed, reddish-scarlet flush typical of the erubescens lineage before the variegation sectors develop and the leaf hardens to its mature coloration.
-
Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining variegation intensity and the characteristic red coloration — insufficient light causes progressive greening and loss of the scarlet flush. Avoid direct harsh sun.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage essential. Never allow roots to sit in waterlogged medium.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; humidity of 60-70% supports the best leaf quality and cleanest emergence. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
-
Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and allow to drain completely. The variegated form is more susceptible to root rot than standard green erubescens.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; consistent feeding supports the fastest growth given the reduced photosynthetic capacity of the variegated sectors. Reduce in winter.
